Mid Fife and Glenrothes MSP Jenny Gilruth has welcomed new figures released by Police Scotland which show a significant decrease in crime levels in Fife.

The statistics, from the Your View Counts public survey, cover the period between April and September 2016 and show a drop of 159 crimes compared to the same period in 2015, a reduction of 2.3%.

Key decreases in crime are noted for housebreakings, which are down 42 crimes or 11% and vehicle crime, which has fallen by 105 offences or 27%.

One area which has seen a rise is serious violent crime which has increased by 25 offences, however Police Scotland’s Divisional Commander for Fife, Chief Superintendent Colin Gall has made assurances that local action plans have been put in place to address this issue in a bid to reduce this type of crime.

Ms Gilruth said: “I welcome the overall fall in crime in Fife, particularly the significant decreases of housebreakings and vehicle crimes. “These statistics are testament to the hard work of police officers within my constituency and across the whole of Fife and serve as an important reminder that Police Scotland has been working hard to keep everyone safe.

“Although the serious violent crime figure has saw an increase it is reassuring that Superintendent Gall and his team in Fife have recognised this and are implementing action plans to target this issue. I know that officers are also currently working with partner organisations in Glenrothes to pilot a new scheme to target violence in the home which is commendable.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chief Superintendent Gall and his team for all their efforts which I hope will continue into the new year.”

The Your View Counts survey remains available on the Police Scotland website via this link: http://www.scotland.police.uk/about-us/decision-making/public-consultation/local-policing-consultation

It can be completed at any time, with all results from Fife going towards shaping policing priorities.
