Column: Community Events in the Constituency

It’s been a busy start to June so far, and I’d like to use my column this week to highlight the many exciting, family-friendly events underway across the constituency this month.

Off to a great start, we saw another successful Markinch Highland Games Day at the beginning on June. The annual event is always a highlight for the local community with an exciting lineup of athletic events, entertainment, and family activities. I’d like to acknowledge the fantastic achievements from my constituents’, Alissa McIvor from Markinch for securing 1st  place in the 200m youths’ race, and Scott Cassidy from Kennoway coming 3rd in the 1600m open.

Nearby, it was great to see the return of the first Coaltown Gala since the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to the hard work of local groups and volunteers in the area for their efforts in bringing this well-loved community event back to life.

Later this month, I’m looking forward to starting the first 2km fun run at the Glenrothes Road Running Festival at the Micheal Woods Centre running track on 22 June, which will see runners from all experienced levels and ages participating in one of Scotland’s longest running road-racing festivals here locally. If you’d like to come along, entries are available any time from the centre reception desk or on the trackside on the day for a small fee.

Over on the east side of the constituency, the annual Big Picnic and Parade in Lower Largo will be taking place this weekend on the 15 June. This year, you can expect a seaside-themed parade with live performances from local pipers and musicians. There will be plenty of fun activities for everyone to enjoy free of charge, such as tug of war, softball cricket and tombola.

Of course, as many of you will know, the Silverburn Festival will also be celebrating its 10th anniversary at Silverburn Park in Leven on the 20th and 21st of June this month. This community event is always a fantastic turnout, with many gathering to enjoy the full festival experience of live music curated by local talent right here on our doorsteps. There will also be free entry for kids, raffle prizes up for grabs, food stalls, and parking passes available free of charge. Huge praise to Fife Employment Access Trust for hosting this annual event for the benefit of families and the local community.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to all local volunteers for their tireless efforts in making these events such a success; without you, none of this would be possible.
