FIFE IS YOUR HOME: JENNY GILRUTH MSP WRITES TO EU CITIZENS LIVING IN MID FIFE AND GLENROTHES

Published date : 24 Oct 2019

Jenny Gilruth MSP has written to all EU Citizens living in her Mid Fife and Glenrothes constituency as the 31 October Brexit deadline approaches to offer advice and support and encourage them to apply for settled status.

EU Citizens living in the UK have to apply for settled status as part of the UK Government’s post-Brexit registration system.

Earlier this month figures revealed that fewer than one third of EU Citizens living in Fife had signed up to the UK Government’s EU Settlement Scheme.

In her letter to constituents, the Fife MSP writes:

“I know that Brexit is causing undue stress to many families and individuals in my constituency but I want you to know that your continued contribution to life in Fife, and Scotland, is valued by me and my parliamentary colleagues.

“To quote the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Scotland is your home, you are welcome here, and you are valued.”

“No matter what happens with Brexit in the coming weeks, I hope you will apply for settled status and continue to make Fife and Scotland your home.”

The Fife MSP held a special joint advice surgery with Citizens Advice & Rights Fife (CARF) for EU Citizens living in Mid Fife and Glenrothes at the beginning of October.

Nina Munday, Manager, at Fife Centre for Equalities said:

“Fife Centre for Equalities wish to thank Jenny Gilruth MSP for her effort in informing EU Citizens living or studying in Fife about the support available to help them to stay in Fife.

“Fife EU Settlement Partnership can offer support and assistance in applying for settlement status. To access this support, individuals only need to fill in a simple form on centreforequalities.org.uk/EUreferral or call 01592 645310.”

Any constituents affected are encouraged to contact Jenny’s constituency office on 01592 764815 or email her at jenny.gilruth.msp@parliament.scot at any time in the coming weeks for advice and support.

EU Citizens can access more information about how to apply for settled status and support available from the Fife Centre for Equalities online at centreforequalities.org.uk/EUreferral or by calling 01592 645310.

Notes

Earlier this month in the Scottish Parliament Jenny Gilruth MSP raised the issue of extra provisions to support EU Citizens to stay in Scotland after Brexit.

Jenny Gilruth MSP welcomed the announcement of £20,000 of Scottish Government funding for the EU Citizens’ Rights Project and new charity Settled to jointly target vulnerable community groups across Scotland with advice and support.

The funding is in addition to Scottish Government-backed services currently being run by Citizens Advice Scotland and comes ahead of the relaunch of the Stay in Scotland campaign.

The Scottish Government Minister for Migration, Ben Macpherson MSP, said: “I am extremely concerned about the UK Government’s approach to their EU Settlement Scheme, and particularly their lack of engagement with those with complex needs. It is disgraceful that the UK Government is compelling EU citizens to apply to retain their existing rights, and we continue to urge the Prime Minister to fulfil his previous commitment and pro-actively guarantee people’s rights in law instead, by implementing a declaratory system.”
