Published date : 12 Aug 2016
Mid Fife & Glenrothes MSP Jenny Gilruth this week met with Addaction Fife at their new premises in the Greig Institute in Leven. Jenny met with Project Manager Gareth Balmer and long serving volunteer Jim Henderson, ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day at the end of August.
Across Fife Addaction provide a valuable role to service users to reduce drug and alcohol related harm such as blood tests, needle provision and safer drug use advice. Commenting Jenny Gilruth MSP said:
“Across Fife Addaction provide a much valued service to those with addiction problems. Gareth and his team play a pivotal role in supporting individuals and families. I was delighted to meet with Gareth and Jim and to hear about the important work they do in Mid Fife and Glenrothes.’
Gareth Balmer of Addaction Fife was keen to use the MSP’s visit to highlight Addaction’s activities in the lead up to International Overdose Awareness Day:
“In the last 10 years more than 5000 people have lost their lives to drug overdose in Scotland. This year as part of international overdose awareness day we are holding an event to both remember those we have lost, to offer an opportunity to find out more about overdose and how we can prevent it and an opportunity for us to unveil our plans to establish a permanent garden of remembrance alongside our premises in Leven.
The Mid Fife and Glenrothes MSP gave her support to the organisations efforts to create a garden of remembrance at the Greig Institute in Leven:
“Addaction’s plans to create a garden of remembrance at the Greig Institute is a fantastic way to remember those who’ve passed away due to drug use. It will also be a place for family and friends to remember their loved ones in peace.’
Addaction’s event will be held at 11am on the 31st of August at the Greig Institute.
